Indeed this is even hoped for, Redding. This is what gives more life and depth to a character, makes him more interesting, intriguing and memorable, be it directly part of the story or not.

No worries, Storm; RP will certainly not die anytime soon here. It is still active as we speak; we are just looking for ways to get people more involved and have more people involved in the play.

Hence, the idea here to find what truly itnerest players in doing RP in general and what would really interest them with their character in a Trek story in particular. Maybe by having the players themselves come up with plot elements OOCly and/or the story built ICly around their individual little plots and finding in there a commonality to bring about the big picture itself, instead of the other way around as is traditional in RP.

BTW, I recall that when I first tried my hand at both text-based RP and Trek storytelling, it was in the STO forum RP section (there are four stories in there involving my character which should still be there ;) ). There we did it in a very open, straightforward manner: every participant came in freely with his own idea and everyone else sort of tried to integrate it with theirs and/or simply react to what the other proposed and everyone built the whole story in a kind of continuous improvising interplay until a conclusion could be drawn up from it all. It was a bit chaotic at times to be sure but it did work in the end, even coming out with amazing scenes like one roguish PC escaping custody of another to go sacrificing himself in a ramming attack to save the others and another (mine in fact) beaming himself out directly in space to retrieve him before he was killed in the attempt... then to be both saved by the PC doctor while another took over command in their absence to save the rest of the ship from the resulting explosion...  and it all came out on the spur of the moment, made up as we went along, out of the improvising contributions of everyone as the events were being unfold without any previous warning to one another!

There are certainly many ways to approach gameplay; the trick is to find one (at least) that would motivate us (and ideally others) to participate and have fun.

Welcome back Kheren. It is great to have you back and to see this RP discussion continuing onward with everyone's input. Based on the responses thus far, it would appear that we at least have a core of RPers ready to begin anew and a variety of ideas to consider.

Perhaps at this point we could set up a date/time to meet in TS3 to finalize some options regarding RP. Meanwhile, we could continue the discussion here in terms of what we would like to do next in regards to our PCs and a next mission.

I would like to continue onto a new mission on the Phoenix: provided that there is enough active crew members involved onboard to sustain a storyline from start to finish. With Kheren now back, he could also do the same on the Horizon.

The key for this to actually work from my perspective, as I mentioned previously, is for active members to participate beyond minimal expectations. Ideally, this would occur daily whenever possible, but may not be practical at times do to real-life events and circumstances. Nevertheless, ideas, plans and such could be conceived in-between the times that we have the opportunity/access to sit down and post something. In short, making available time around obligations that exist... and making our involvement in RP a priority to the best of our individual capacity throughout a story and not just at the beginning.

So... let's figure out where we go from here and perhaps we could have something in place in the next few weeks to begin once again.

 Unfortunately, I cannot attend this Sunday, the 20th. Parents 60th anniversary celebration. However, if you all do decide to have a meeting after the meetings, by all means discuss this further.

 I for one would like to know if there are enough active RP'ers to man both ships. Or should we let the current Horizon RP wrap up and then try to get in another fleet action with 1 ship as a base.

 Summer is a slow time for the fleet, naturally, as holidays start then finish, and then school/university looms it's leering gaze upon some. Not to mention the working members whom fight for balance with their families/work/leisure/RP time.

 There is also some good RP plots in the "Mission Suggestion" forum that bear thinking about as well. :)

 Anyway, be sure to PM me any relevant info arising from the meeting(s). I look forward to listening to the recording ... *hint hint* lol

I think we should discuss it during the regular fleet meeting round table or afterwards.

Kheren has taken on the role of RP Administrator and he has some out-of-the-box ideas that may help to rejuvenate the RP going forward that I look forward to discussing tomorrow.

Unfortunately Kheren was unavailable for the meeting, but it looks like a lot of other people on this thread were also not. Can we all decided on a common time (at least for as many people as we can get together) to meet and discuss some ideas?

I can usually make myself available as long as it is after work (7 EST) or weekends.

I was present, but as Evshell indicated, we definitely need more of those directly involved with RP to be present during the next discussion. There are important things to discuss/decide in a variety of capacities, as demonstrated in the discussions already occurring within this thread alone.

I am available any evening this coming week except Wednesday; although Monday and/or Tuesday would be the best days for me.

Another way of doing this would be to post here those ideas you have and then either have a discussion on them later on if needed or, if some consensus already seems to come out of those posted ideas, implement some actual trial of them in an upcoming (or even current) RP session... or at least have them discussed or moving around from here.

This would both save time and even resolve the always problematic situation of having to find a common and long enough time slot where everyone who would want to be involved or have something to provide could be present, especially during this season.

I find value in verbally discussing things if we can actually find a time to do so. Text is inconvenient in the time that it takes to go back and forth. A discussion that verbally takes an hour could take days or even weeks through forum posts. I don't see the harm in at least trying to find a time that will work for a good number of the participants, and then we could go from there.

Regardless, I will post some of the ideas discussed here for review, so if we do find a meeting time we can discuss them further at that point.

Idea #1:
An idea Kheren posed to me that I like a lot is to possibly have him, as the RP Administrator, GM the story while having another person maintaining the role of Captain. This would allow the Captain to fall somewhat between the roles of GM and player, and allow him to be able to react to the unknown and work with his crew to come up with a solution to the problem without necessarily knowing the solution ahead of time.

The Captain would still work closely with the GM to come up with an overall story plan, and be involved in the general aspects of GMing (the macro), but would not necessarily know all of the specifics throughout the story ahead of time (the micro).

The GM could manage the environment, enemies, and external NPCs similar to a traditional D&D GM. The Captain would manage everything that involves the ship, including all the NPCs not managed by other players and makes decisions about where the ship goes and does just as a real Starship Captain would.

Idea #2:
Something I thought up of was a potential solution to the problem of having new RPers come in for only a small amount of time and then vanish, leaving a department open and forcing the Captain to take over the role with an NPC.

We currently have a number of very active and dedicated RPers. It is my view that going forward, if we were to place all of those active RPers into the Chief position roles on one ship, this ship would be able to do multiple stories with a reliable and established crew.

Now, what about new RPers? Where would they fit in? Previously we've maintained the position that unless a player is placed in one of the 5 primary Chief roles, they would not have enough to do. I do not believe that necessarily to be the case. I think it would be good to follow the pattern that would be followed in a real life situation and place a new RPer in the assistant role underneath an established player. This would allow them to interact directly with that player and character on a regular basis and allow the veteran player to "mentor" the new RPer in a way we haven't seen thus far. Additionally, if the veteran RPer assigns meaningful tasks and problems to solve to this new person, they will have plenty to do and say.

This format would allow new RPers to adjust to the RP and learn the way we do our RP, and if they decide it is not for them, it doesn't affect the story, stalling it while waiting for responses that would never come, and forcing the Captain to do more work by using an NPC.

Combining these two ideas:
I believe that the RP would benefit by starting off with one ship to start, we would need to decide on a GM and Captain, although I won't mention any names right now, as it is not my decision to make, nor is it beneficial to do such a thing in such a public forum. However, this would require certain people to give up positions that they might really want, without bringing in emotions, for the good of the RP.

For example, the Engineering spot would be hotly contested based on how many people we currently have that like to play that role. Additionally, we'd only have 1 Captain and 1 XO (to start). This does not mean we couldn't go back to 2 ships when the roster truly does grow enough to warrant it, but right now I can only count 6-7 truly active RPers. This means that some people would have to take on Medical, Operations, Science, and Tactical, the less sought after roles.

With the Horizon, however, we do have the opportunity to have a sort of 2nd ship, the Polaris, which some people may want to put an NPC on, in the department that they truly have an interest in. There are also Marine and Diplomatic detachments that could provide more opportunities for new RPers.

While I was hit with RL recently and don't have the time nor motivation to participate right now or in the near future, I hope these ideas might allow the RP to grow and thrive until such time as I find the time to regularly set aside time every day to participate. However, with the RP now fully in the hands of Kheren, it is his decision what ideas to implement.

I agree with Evshell in that that we can accomplish in an hour or so in TS3 what can take additional weeks through posting back-and-forth on a thread. This thread alone has been going on for about a month already and is filled with a bunch of good ideas, thoughts, suggestions, etc... and actually, this discussion began months before this post was even started. Even our brief discussion on Sunday seemed like a step in the right direction.

Perhaps to prepare for a potential meeting, everyone seriously interested in participating can first acknowledge their intention here and then list out their preferences for upcoming RP. This could give us some things to consider before we move much further in the decision-making process.
For example:

Choices:

Primary role: Syntron, Vulcan
                1st: CO
                2nd : CSO
                3rd: XO
(notice... I didn't list engineering... but ships could use more than one engineer, or scientist. They could perhaps have different specializations)
 
Ship: science oriented (if possible)

Mission: primarily exploration/investigation (with other engaging aspects occurring throughout as well)

(Note: This is just a start... others please add your input to this as well)
